Dr. Lemaitre Bruno, Professor, Global Health Institute, EPFL, Switzerland

Bruno Lemaitre is a French immunologist and a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. He obtained his PhD in 1992 at the University Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris). Then he joined Jules Hoffmann’s lab as a postdoc, where he identified Toll-like receptors as essential mediators of innate immunity in Drosophila (Lemaitre et al., 1996, Cell). This work was considered as a landmark paper by the Nobel prize committee and was featured in the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded to Hoffmann. In 1998, he started his own lab at the Centre Génétique Moléculaire a research institute of the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique at Gif-sur-Yvette (France). In 2007, he became full professor at the Ecole Polytechnique of Lausanne (EPFL). His laboratory uses the fruit fly as a model genetic system doing research in the field of innate immunity, Drosophila-Spiroplasma interactions and gut homeostasis. He was elected as an EMBO member and received numerous scientific rewards.

讲座摘要/Abstract:

Following decades of neglect where adaptive immunity captured most of the attention, innate immune mechanisms have become central to our understanding of immunology. However, the recent emphasis on innate immunity has focused on the first two phases of the immune response: recognition and signaling. In contrast, the contribution of immune effectors individually or collectively to host resistance has not yet been investigated to the same extent. We are currently dissecting the Drosophila innate immune response with a focus on effectors. By deciphering how immune effectors combat infectious microbes and impact non-immune processes, our work will illuminate critical aspects of Drosophila host defense, and will be instrumental in comprehension of innate immunity in general.
