Dr. Jinrong Peng, Professor of Zhejiang University


Jinrong Peng got his BSc in Sichuan University in 1984 and MSc in Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry in 1987. He then was appointed as an assistant lecturer at Fudan University. He received his PhD from John Innes Centre, a prestigious institute famous on plant molecular genetics, in 1993, and did his post-doc research in John Innes Centre from 1993-1999. He was appointed as a senior scientist by Institute of Molecular Agrobiology in 1999 and by IMCB in 2002. From later of 2008, he was appointed as a full professor by Zhejiang University. His lab mainly focuses on studying liver development and regeneration in zebrafish, has published a series of high impact papers in top notch journals including Nature, Science, Genes & Dev, and Cell Research.


讲座摘要/Abstract:

Ribosome small subunit (SSU) is assembled by the SSU processome which contains ~70 proteins factors and small nucleolar RNAs such as U3. Although extensive studies have been carried out to define the working mechanism for the SSU processome, very little is known regarding the roles of its protein factors in regulating developmental processes. Meanwhile, no systematic studies have been carried out to investigate how the protein factors are transported to the nucleolus. Our lab found that UTP25/DEF, a factor in the SSU processome, can recruit the cysteine proteinase Calpain3 into the nucleolus to cleave proteins such as p53 to regulate the cell cycle during liver development and regeneration. We also found that BMS1 uses its GTPase activity to disassociate the BMS1-DNA complex to balance the conflict between replication and transcription at the rDNA loci. Recently, we have determined that UTP3 mediates the nucleolar localization of five proteins in the SSU processome. These findings unraveled the new biological functions of the nucleolus.
