Dr. Ren Sun

Distinguished Professor Emeritus, UCLA

Professor, School of Biomedical Sciences, The University of Hong Kong

Professor Ren Sun graduated from Fudan University with BS in biology. After his training in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, he joined UCLA as a faculty member. In year 2018, he was honored as Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology of the School of Medicine and Bioengineering of the School of Engineering at UCLA. In year 2020, he joined the University of Hong Kong as a professor at School of Biomedical Sciences. He served as Associate Dean of David Geffen School of Medicine and Associate Vice Provost of UCLA from 2009 to 2019 and Senior Advisor to the President at HKU since 2019.

讲座摘要/Abstract:

Professor Ren Sun takes systems biology approaches to address critical interactions between virus and host. His lab has integrated genomics, proteomics, and structural biology to comprehensive definition of cellular innate responses and adaptive immunity to viruses. In this talk, he will illustrate with his study on influenza virus and coronavirus.

His lab has recently developed a platform technology that can generate functional maps of entire viral genomes at single nucleotide/amino acid resolution. The immune-evasion functions on the virus were systematically identified and precisely removed from the viral genome.  The engineered viruses became more immunogenic than the wild type, but severely attenuated in vivo. Thereby, it can be a general rational approach to develop therapeutic or prophylactic vaccine for many pathogens.

His lab has also established a platform technology to profile antibody responses at single amino acid resolution and at genomic scale.  His lab has comprehensively defined the antibody responses to viral antigens and auto-antigens during and after COVID infection.
