主讲人简介/Biography:

Shang-Tian Yang is Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Food Science and Technology, Molecular Genetics, and Biomedical Engineering at the Ohio State University. He received his B.S. degree in Agricultural Chemistry from National Taiwan University and M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemical Engineering from Purdue University. Dr. Yang has been involved in bioprocessing research for more than 40 years, and has 12 patents, some of which have been licensed to companies for commercial development. His group pioneered in engineering clostridia for high-titer and high-yield butyric acid and n-butanol production from renewable biomass and CO2. During his 38 years at OSU, he has supervised more than 50 PhD students and directed many research projects on novel bioprocesses for value-added products from agricultural and food processing wastes, metabolic and process engineering for carboxylic acids and butanol production, and novel bioreactor design and process scale up. Dr. Yang has published more than 400 journal papers, proceeding articles, and book chapters in the field of bioprocess engineering, with over 21800 total citations and an h-index of 86. Dr. Yang is an elected fellow of American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, a past chair of Division 15 Food, Pharmaceutical and Bioengineering of American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the Editor-in-Chief for the journal Synthetic Biology and Engineering, Specialty Chief Editor for Frontiers in Chemical Engineering - Biochemical Engineering, and an Associate Editor for Process Biochemistry for 20 years until 2023. He received AIChE Division 15 Food, Pharmaceuticals & Bioengineering Service Award (2023), Clara M. and Peter L. Scott Faculty Award for Excellence in Engineering Education, Ohio State University (2023), Probst lectureship, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL (2022), and Outstanding ABE Alumnus, Purdue University (2018).

讲座摘要/Abstract:

My research group has developed several bioprocesses for production of biofuels and bio-based chemicals, including butanol, short-chain fatty acids (e.g., acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid), and dicarboxylic acids (e.g., malic acid and fumaric acid). These carboxylic acids and butanol are important chemicals with wide applications in food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Butanol can also be used as an advanced biofuel with superior fuel properties compared to ethanol. Currently, these chemicals are almost exclusively produced via petrochemical routes, but they can also be produced from renewable biomass via microbial fermentation. The bioconversion (biorefinery) provides an environmentally friendly and sustainable route for chemicals and fuels production with minimal greenhouse gas emissions.  In my presentation, I’ll discuss some of the major challenges and opportunities in industrial production of biofuels and biobased chemicals from biomass and carbon dioxide. Some of our technologies in engineering microbial cells for the biosynthesis of butanol and carboxylic acids and novel bioreactors and processes with in-situ product recovery for economical production of these chemicals from various carbon sources at an industrial scale will be highlighted.
