主讲人简介/Biography:
Dr. Ronnie H. Fang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California San Diego. He graduated summa cum laude from UC San Diego with dual bachelor's degrees in Engineering Physics and Biochemistry & Cell Biology, and completed his Ph.D. in NanoEngineering under the mentorship of Professor Liangfang Zhang, also at UC San Diego. As part of Dr. Zhang’s research group, he was instrumental in developing cell membrane coating nanotechnology, an innovative, top-down approach for adding biological functionality to nanoparticles. For over a decade, Dr. Fang has led research focused on applying cell membrane-coated nanoparticles to drug delivery and vaccine development. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, accumulating over 25,000 citations with an h-index of 78.
讲座摘要/Abstract:
Cell membrane coating is a streamlined and versatile method for imparting multifunctionality to synthetic nanoparticle platforms. Depending on the source cell selected, these cell membrane-coated nanoparticles exhibit biomimetic properties that significantly enhance their performance in diverse biomedical applications, including targeted drug delivery, immunomodulation, and biodetoxification. To date, most research in this area has predominantly utilized wild-type cells as the membrane source. Although effective and offering a broad range of cellular options, this approach remains limited by the natural expression profiles inherently present on the surface of these cells. To overcome this limitation, researchers have developed several strategies to augment the capabilities of cell membrane-coated nanoparticles. Techniques such as lipid anchoring, membrane fusion, and glycan engineering have been successfully applied to further extend nanoparticle functionality. In this talk, Dr. Fang will explore how genetic engineering can be utilized as a powerful tool to enhance the properties of cell membrane-coated nanoparticles beyond their natural capabilities. Genetic engineering offers significant advantages, including precise control over membrane protein expression and substantial flexibility, enabling researchers to engineer nanoparticles with tailored functionalities suitable for nearly any desired biomedical application.
