Shunsuke Chiba earned his PhD in chemistry in 2006 under the supervision of Prof. Koichi Narasaka at the University of Tokyo. In 2007, he embarked on his independent career as a faculty member of Nanyang Technological University Singapore, where he is currently Professor of Chemistry. His research group focuses on methodology development in the area of synthetic chemistry and catalysis.

Abstract:

Sulfur forms catenated homoatomic polysulfide dianions S_n^2– (commonly, n = 2-8) and a persistent radical anion S₃^•– (which has been recognized as a chromophore in ultramarine blues).¹The redox potentials of polysulfide anions have been elucidated mainly for the development of alkali metals-sulfur batteries. We recently revealed that these polysulfide anions function to mediate single-electron transfer and hydrogen atom transfer under irradiation with visible light.^2-4 This lecture will present recent directions in our group toward development of molecular transformations under polysulfide anion photocatalysis.
