主讲人简介/Biography:

Dr. Gu is a tenured Professor at Chinese University of Hong Kong. He serves as a researcher at Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics of University of California, Santa Barbara, a researcher at Perimeter Institute in Canada and a visiting researcher at California Institute of Technology. He is also a visiting scholar at Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Zhejiang University. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University in 2003 and his PhD in Physics from Institute for Advanced Study, Tsinghua University in 2008. He then spent a few years as a postdoc in MIT. His research interests include theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, and high-energy particle physics.

讲座摘要/Abstract:

Tensor network states are new kinds of variational wavefunctions that help us to understand quantum phases and phase transitions beyond Landau paradigm. In this talk, l will first review the major development of tensor-network simulation in the past two decades. In particular, l will introduce the novel concept of long-range entanglement and entanglement renormalization. Then l will discuss the major breakthroughs made by tensor-network simulations in recent years. If time permits, l will also mention the relationship between deep learning and tensor network simulation.
