主讲人/Speaker Feng Chen (陈峰), School of Physics, State Key Laboratory of Crystal Materials, Shandong University, China

陈峰教授,现任山东大学物理学院院长,晶体材料国家重点实验室副主任。国家杰出青年科学基金获得者(2009),入选教育部“新世纪优秀人才支持计划”(2008),享受政府特殊津贴专家(2010),入选国家百千万人才工程(有突出贡献中青年专家,2019)。

Feng Chen is currently a Professor at School of Physics and State Key Laboratory of Crystal Materials, Shandong University (SDU), China. He serves as Dean of School of Physics, and Vice Director of State Key Laboratory of Crystal Materials, SDU. He received the PhD degree from SDU in 2002. From 2003 to 2005, he was an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at Clausthal Technical University, Germany. His research interests include fabrication of micro-nanoscale photonic structures, optical waveguides, ion beam modification of nanomaterials, laser writing, plasmonics, lasers, nonlinear optics, etc. He has more than 300 papers published in peer-reviewed journals, 1 professional book, 4 book chapters, and holds 7 patents. Feng Chen is a Fellow of Institute of Physics (IOP), UK, a Senior Member of Optical Society of America (OSA) and SPIE, a Director Board Member of Chinese Physical Society (CPS). He also serves Deputy Editor of Chinese Optics Letters, an Editorial Board Member of Optical Engineering, Scientific Reports, and Physics, a subcommittee member of CLEO, CLEO-Europe, a Steering Committee member of CIOP, etc., and an active reviewer for more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is also an international Project Proposal Reviewer for SNSF, ANR, and ARC.

Materials Modification by Ion Beams and Femtosecond Lasers for Photonic Applications

 

讲座摘要/Abstract:

Energetic ion beams and femtosecond lasers are both efficient techniques for materials modification. By using ion beams with diverse parameters, the refractive index of optical materials (e.g., crystals, glass) could be modified through the interaction of incident ions and target atoms, resulting in waveguide structures as platforms for lasing, nonlinear frequency conversion, etc. Particularly, by using He ion implantation combined with wafer bonding technology, one can produce high-quality crystalline lithium niobate thin films (with thickness less than 1μm), which can be used as unique platforms for electrooptic, nonlinear optical, and quantum photonic devices. Moreover, embedded metallic nanoparticles (e.g., Au or Ag) can be synthesized in dielectrics by direct ion implantation, which significantly enhance the optical nonlinearities of the substrates, enabling new applications of the materials. In addition, ion beam technique has been realized as an efficient method to tailor the properties of 2D materials by defect engineering. Similarly, as a powerful tool for 3D materials engineering, femtosecond laser writing has been utilized to produce low-loss waveguides with diverse geometries in dielectrics. With special designs, 3D waveguides have been implemented by using laser writing. These structures receive a number of intriguing applications in photonics, such as wavelength conversion, lasing, amplification, sensing, and quantum information processing. In this talk, I will introduce the fundamentals and recent progress on this topic.
