Seniorresearcher  (Directeur de Recherche ) atLaboratoirePhysique et Etude de Matériaux (CNRS/ESPCI), PSL Research University, Paris, France

KamranBehniaobtained his Ph.D. working on heavy-fermion systems in Grenoble. He then spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Universityof Geneva. In 1992, he was employed by Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and spent seven years working on organic andcupratesuperconductors at Paris-Sud University. Since 2000, he has been based at EcoleSupérieurede Physique et deChimieIndustrielles (ESPCI) in Paris. He became the Fellow of American Physical society since 2012. He is the member of Board of Reviewing Editors of Science, Divisional Associate EditorofPhys.Rev. Lett, and Associate Editor of JPSJ.He is interested in collective quantum phenomena in a variety of solids ranging from semimetals to superconductors. His book “Fundamentals of Thermoelectricity” was recently published by Oxford University Press.

  讲座摘要:
A hundred years after its discovery, superconductivity is yet to be domesticated by the quantum theory of solids. In the three decades following the formulation of the BCS theory of superconductivity, it was considered as a solved problem. Then the discovery of unconventional superconductors indicated that Cooper pairs can be mediated by bosons other than phonons. A paradigm emerged which contended that superconductivity can be strengthen with the orders which compete with it.  This would explain the dome-like shape of the critical temperature in numerous families of superconductors.
In this talk, after reviewing recent discoveries in the field, I will focus on dilute superconductivity and try to summarize recent experiments which address the following question. How does a superconductor die when electrons become far apart?
