As a member of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology, Professor Max Lu is also Director of the Boards of UKRI, the National Physical Laboratory, Universities UK, and member of the Leadership Council of the National Centre for Universities and Business. Locally, he also serves as Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey and a patron of the charity Transform.

Professor Lu founded the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Functional Nanomaterials, and served as its director for 8 years. He was awarded the Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship in 2003 and in 2008. A pre-eminent chemical engineer and nanotechnologist, Professor Lu is one of the highly cited academics – for both Materials Science and Chemistry – in the world. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed articles in top journals (h=122), attracting more than 62,000 citations (Scopus).

He is co-inventor of more than 20 granted international patents, and has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Orica Award, the RK Murphy Medal, the Le Fevre Prize, the ExxonMobil Award, China International Science and Technology Award, the Japan Chemical Society Lecture Award, the Chemeca Medal, and the PV Danckwerts Lecture.

He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his distinguished service to education and international research and to Australia–China relations in 2017. He was named as a Queensland Great in 2013 and one of Australia’s ‘Top 100 Most Influential Engineers’ several times, and in 2014, he received the Australia–China Achievement Award for Education.

Professor Lu served on many Government committees in Australia.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Institution of Chemical Engineers, Royal Society of Chemistry, Australian Academy of Science, Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, World Academy of Science, National Academy of Inventors, and a Foreign Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
