主讲人/Speaker Alberto Bressan, Eberly Family Chair Professor of Mathematics, Mathematics Department, Penn State University


Professor Bressan received his B.S. (1978) from University of Padova, Italy and his Ph. D. (1982) University of Calorado, Boulder. He joined University of Padova as Researcher (1982-1986), University of Colorado, Boulder as Associate Professor (1986-1991), S.I.S.S.A., Trieste as Professor (1991-2003) and joined Penn State University in 2003. Earlier in his career, he made certain important contributions to the theory of hyperbolic conservation laws and was invited to give a plenary talk at International Congress of Mathematicians 2002 in Beijing. He won a number of distinguished awards including Bôcher Memorial Price 2008, Analysis of Partial Differential Equations, 2007. He became a member of the Royal Norwegian Society of Science and Letters in 2011 and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2012.

Optimal Irrigation Problems and Applications

 

讲座摘要/Abstract:

Given N points in the plane, the Steiner problem (dating back to Gauss, 1836) consists in finding the shortest connected curve that contains all these points. In a similar problem proposed by Gilbert (1967), N houses must be connected to a well by a network of pipes, minimizing a cost which accounts for the length of each pipe and also for the flux of water through each pipe.

This talk will cover a more general irrigation problem, where the final distribution of water (instead of N point masses) is any given Radon measure. Applications to the optimal shapes of tree roots and tree branches will be discussed.
