Xiang-Dong Fu received his B.S. degree of Virology from Wuhan University in 1982. He was the first class of the CUSBEA (China-United States Biochemistry Examination and Application) program to enter the US for graduate training. He did his graduate work with Jonathan Lis on retroviral replication and received his Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University in 1988. He subsequently received postdoctoral training on pre-mRNA splicing at Harvard in 1988. In 1992, he joined the faculty at University of California, San Diego and rose through the rank (Assistant Professor, 1992-1998; Associate Professor with tenure, 1998 to 2002; Full Professor, 2002-2018; and Distinguished Professor, 2018-present).

Connecting RNA Biology to Key Developmental and Disease Processes


讲座摘要/Abstract:

RNA research has never been short of surprises. In this lecture, Dr. Fu will cover two recent stories from his lab, one on genome reprogramming in fertilized egg and the other on cell reprogramming to make new neurons in the brain. The first story addresses the mechanism for coordinated paternal and maternal genome reprogramming upon fertilization, which is unexpectedly catalyzed by a key splicing kinase. The second story describes the development of a new strategy to trans-differentiate non-neuronal cells to functional neurons directly in the brain by depleting a single RNA binding protein. This strategy may be broadly applicable to neurodegenerative disease as demonstrated on a Parkinson’s Disease model. Together, these two stories underscore the importance of basic research in solving life problems.
